The Great Pyramid of Giza is one of the most iconic structures in human history, a testament to the ingenuity of the ancient Egyptians. Built as a tomb for Pharaoh Khufu, it is the largest and oldest of the pyramids in Egypt and is believed to have been constructed around 2560 BCE, making it one of the oldest surviving man-made structures in the world. But did you know that the Great Pyramid isn’t actually the largest pyramid in the world? That honour belongs to a much lesser known pyramid located in Sudan, known as the Nuri Pyramid.
Standing at a remarkable 213 feet (65 meters) tall, the Nuri Pyramid is the largest pyramid in the world. It is also the oldest, believed to have been constructed during the 5th century BCE by the Kushite kings. It is located in the city of Meroe, which was the capital of the powerful Kingdom of Kush, located in what is now Sudan. Unlike the Great Pyramid of Giza, which was built with limestone blocks, the Nuri Pyramid was constructed with solid granite and basalt blocks. This makes it an even more impressive feat of engineering, as the ancient Egyptians did not have the technology to quarry, transport, and lift these heavy stones.
