The Giant Hornet, also known as the Asian Giant Hornet or Vespa mandarinia, is an invasive species that has been discovered in North Carolina, and it’s causing quite a stir. This large, yellow and black insect can reach up to two inches long and has a powerful sting that can be fatal to humans if enough of the venom is injected. As the hornets establish themselves in the state, it’s important for people to understand what they are, how to stay safe, and what to do if they are encountered.
Native to Japan, China, and other parts of Asia, the Giant Hornet was first spotted in North Carolina in late 2019. Since then, multiple sightings have been reported and the number of colonies continues to grow. The hornets are most active during the summer months and typically nest in hollow trees, under rocks, or in other sheltered areas. They feed primarily on insects, but will also attack small animals like birds or mice. In addition to their powerful sting, the hornets can also release a potent pheromone that can cause allergic reactions in some humans.
